There is a Rental Crisis in Australia (high rents and property owners not giving permission for tenants to have a pet), severe financial hardship being experienced by many people after Covid 19 and an increase in Mortgage Repayments (interest rates increases). Thousands of pet owners are surrendering, abandoning or dumping theirs pets and the pounds are at capacity. To make room for more animals, they euthanize animals on a regularly basis.
In NSW, 2023 – 2024, 6000 animals in pounds were euthanized.
